Trap & Skeet

Rockford Sportsman’s Club hosts Trap, Skeet and 5-Stand.  Our facilities include a Skeet Field, Combination Trap & Skeet Field and a 5-Stand Field.  Our fields are fully lighted and we shoot into the dark.  Stop on by and shoot with us!  All skill levels are welcome.

Trap shooting is a specific form of clay target shooting.  Trapshooting is a game of movement, action and split second timing.  It requires the accuracy and skill to repeatedly aim, fire and break the 4.25in disc which is hurled through the air at speeds around 42mph, simulating the flight path of a bird fleeing a unter.  In singles trap, a shooter stands 16 yards away from the center of the trap house and shoots at random targets that fly at various angles in front of him/her.  Shooters are grouped into squads of generally 5 people.  There are five positions that each shooter shoots from, five shots per person, totaling twenty five shots or one round.  For more information take a look at The Amateur Trapshooting Association’s Website

Skeet has eight shooting stations and two trap houses.  Seven of the stations are arranged in a half moon between the two trap houses, and one station is directly between them.  The high house, on the left side of the field, throws its targets from a trap 10 feet above the ground.  The target rises to a height of 15 feet by the time it travels to the center of the field.  The low house target, on the right side, leaves the house just 3 1/2 feet from the ground.  It also rises to a height of 15 feet by the time it reaches the center of the field.  A round of skeet consists of 25 targets, with 17 shot as singles and 8 as doubles.  The first miss is repeated immediately and is called an option.  If no targets are missed during the round, the 25th target is shot at the last station, low house 8.  Skeet shooting mimics passing birds.  For more information take a look at the National Skeet Shooting Association’s Website
